One Childhood - One Chance

Year 6 Weekly News: 22.03.24

Another busy week in the life of Year 6!

Easter Cracked

Across the past two weeks, our Year 6 children have participated in Easter Cracked: an afternoon workshop, held at a local Church, and led by ACTS (Active Christianity in Thanet Schools), who work closely with schools to support the moral, social and cultural development of children and young people. The activities were designed not only to impart knowledge, but also to instil values and foster a deeper understanding of the true meaning of Easter. A very big well done and thank you to our Year 6’s, who represented the school so fabulously, showing the Upton Way!

Author visit

This week, we were incredibly fortunate to receive a visit from the award-winning children’s author: Tony Bradman. Known for his engaging storytelling and historical narratives, Tony shared his journey to becoming a children's writer. From his humble beginnings to the milestones and challenges he encountered along the way; Tony's story resonated deeply with both children and adults alike. The highlight of Tony’s visit was, without doubt, the interactive session, where children were given the opportunity to ask questions about Tony’s writing and life’s work. Children were offered insights and anecdotes that left them inspired and empowered to embark on their own creative endeavours.

Ramsgate Tunnels

This week, our children have also embarked on a journey through time, as they visited the historic Ramsgate Tunnels, delving deep into the harrowing tales of World War II and the profound impact it had on our local area. Guided by local historians, children learnt about the construction of the tunnels, as well as what life was like living in the tunnels during the time of war. Hearing stories about life underground, children gained a profound understanding of the trials and tribulations endured by those who lived through the darkest days of war. The day was a huge success all round- the children exemplified the school values incredibly well and returned to school, with newfound appreciation for the sacrifices made by those who came before them.

Next week, we will continue to deepen our understanding of how Thanet was impacted by WW2, by exploring further 'Operation Dynamo'. We will also be moving onto our RE studies, which will involve children learning about the importance of churches. Children will be developing their understanding of how churches link to the Bible and will likewise explore how they support the local community.

Parent ‘Book Looks’

We would like to extend a very big thank you to parents, for joining us this week to celebrate your children's learning and achievements. It really was lovely to see so many of you come together to share in the joy and excitement of your children's learning and achievements. Your support is greatly appreciated, and it means so much to your children, too! We hope that you enjoyed the opportunity to witness first-hand the progress that your children have made and the passion and enthusiasm they bring to their learning each day. Your involvement in school life plays a crucial role in inspiring and empowering your children to reach their full potential, and for that, we are truly thankful!

English

Inspired by our core text, ‘Letters from the Lighthouse’, children, this week, have embarked on a thought-provoking exploration of moral dilemmas to inform their writing of a Balanced Argument. Our week started with children undertaking a debate: arguing a case for whether a German soldier, stranded in Devon, should be saved or not. This scenario, served as a catalyst for rich discussions and critical thinking; children presented compelling arguments, drawing upon evidence from the text and their own perspectives to support their stance. As we close the week, children have begun planning and drafting their balanced argument, which we look forward to publishing next week!

Maths

This week in Maths, our learning has been focused on statistics. Our Year 6’s, have been learning how to decipher the stories hidden within the lines and curves of Line graphs and likewise, have learnt how to interpret key components: from understanding the axes and labels, to identifying the significance of data points and trends. Throughout their learning, children have acquired the essential skills needed to navigate line graphs with confidence and likewise, interpret data from a range of data sets.  Next week, we will be moving on to exploring ratio and proportion.
