Personal Development  

This week, we have been exploring Personal Development, and as such, learning has focused on relationships and behaviours. This week, children have been learning: 

• about what gender stereotyping means and evaluate, as a society, how gender equality can be challenged

• how stereotyping in the media can have a negative effect upon society and individuals

• the importance of doing the ‘right thing’ and accepting accountability

• about appropriate communication online and recognise how to be respectful digital citizens

Maths 

In Maths this week, our Year 6 children have been delving deeper into the realms of fractions, developing their understanding further, by exploring more complex operations involving the use of fractions. Children have likewise been honing their skills in using written methods for the four operations: addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. Through practice and application, children have been mastering the techniques needed to solve problems efficiently and accurately. Next week, children will be further consolidating their knowledge and understanding of Measure and Algebra.

English  

In English class this week, our Year 6 children have embarked on a thrilling journey into the pages of Michael Morpurgo's "Kensuke's Kingdom." Using their imagination and creativity, children have been producing written instructions for making an island soup, carefully detailing each step and ingredient. From exotic fruits to savoury seafood; their recipes are as diverse and imaginative as the island itself. Not only have children honed their writing skills, they’ve likewise had the opportunity to explore the connections between literature and real-world experiences. Next week promises to be filled with suspense, excitement, and daring escapades, as our children take on the challenge of crafting a suspense narrative, of a character falling overboard, the Peggy Sue. We can’t wait! 

SATs 

With SATs just around the corner, we understand that for some children, this can be a trigger of anxiety for parents and children all over the country, it is therefore vital that Year 6 pupils are able to navigate their preparation for SATs, without experiencing undue stress or anxiety. Children are incredibly resilient, and with support from you and the school, most will have a very positive experience of SATs. 

How can I help my child?  

• Make sure your child gets plenty of sleep, have a good breakfast and arrive at school on time each day.  

• Join our free SATs breakfast from Monday 6th May. 

• Encourage your child to read daily.  

• Encourage your child to read fiction and non-fiction.  

• Try to ask your child questions about the text.  

• Help your child with different skills of reading especially ‘skim’ reading where they are looking for key words in the text.  

• Encourage your child to P.E.E.—make a point, provide evidence and explain.  

• Support your child to complete homework on Mathletics.  

• Encourage your child to access more texts and complete their quizzes on Accelerated Reader.  

• Encourage your child to access TT Rockstars, to work on rapid recall of multiplication tables.  

• Encourage your child to use BBC Bitesize to enhance learning. Free interactive KS1 and KS2 SATs revision resources - BBC Bitesize.

Home Learning  

Attached below is the overarching Thematic Curriculum homework ideas. Please refer to the homework menu which gives a variety of creative tasks for the children to choose from. Children only need to complete one task as a minimum, but can choose to complete more if they wish. Homework is due in on Friday 24th May.   

Spelling Shed  

• Once a week: Friday to Friday.  

• Tasks to be completed online, with new tasks set every week.  

• Tasks will always follow the spellings being taught in class that week.

Reminder to ensure:  

• Children are wearing correct school uniform and shoes.
