Thematic 

Our thematic learning this week has centred around the pivotal moments that marked the conclusion of World War II. We’ve traced the final battles, examined the treaties, and explored the profound impact of these events on the world, leading to the birth of the United Nations Charter. Children have also spent time this week, exploring the purpose of the United Nations Charter, delving into its principles, understanding how it serves as the cornerstone of international law, guiding nations towards a shared vision of harmony and cooperation. One of the most profound learning points throughout our topic, has been the sheer magnitude, effort and sacrifice that has gone into shaping the world we live in today.  

Next week, our children will be learning about the Nuremberg Trials and how they represent a pivotal juncture in the aftermath of World War II, where the leaders of the Nazi regime were brought to justice for their atrocities.  

English: 

In our English lessons this week, we've donned our reporter hats and delved deep into the art of crafting compelling news reports. At the heart of our learning this week, children have explored the nuances of journalistic writing, and have likewise, honed their skills in capturing the essence of a story – from the dramatic events aboard the Peggy Sue to the frantic search efforts that followed. But perhaps most importantly, children have learned how to adapt their writing style to suit the tone and audience of their reports. From the more formal use of reporter language, to the conversational tone of eyewitness accounts, children have explored the subtle shifts in formality that lend depth and authenticity to their writing. 

Next week, through the powers of descriptive language and skilful use of vocabulary, we will be bringing the enigmatic figure of Kensuke to life on the page! 

Maths: 

This week in Maths, children have been deepening their understanding of measure, fractions and shape. Children have spent time applying their knowledge and understanding, through the use of problem-solving activities, involving similar shapes where the scale factor is known or can be found and, likewise, problems that involve the unequal sharing and grouping using knowledge of fractions and multiples. 

Next week, children will be consolidating and deepening their understanding of angles and long division.

With SATs just around the corner, we understand that for some children, this can be a trigger of anxiety for parents and children all over the country, it is therefore vital that Year 6 pupils are able to navigate their preparation for SATs, without experiencing undue stress or anxiety. Children are incredibly resilient, and with support from you and the school, most will have a very positive experience of SATs.  

How can I help my child?   

• Make sure your child gets plenty of sleep, have a good breakfast and arrive at school on time each day.   

• Join our free SATs breakfast from Monday 6th May.  

• Encourage your child to read daily.   

• Encourage your child to read fiction and non-fiction.   

• Try to ask your child questions about the text.   

• Help your child with different skills of reading especially ‘skim’ reading where they are looking for key words in the text.   

• Encourage your child to P.E.E.—make a point, provide evidence and explain.   

• Support your child to complete homework on Mathletics.   

• Encourage your child to access more texts and complete their quizzes on Accelerated Reader.   

• Encourage your child to access TT Rockstars, to work on rapid recall of multiplication tables.

Home Learning   

Attached below is the overarching Thematic Curriculum homework ideas. Please refer to the homework menu which gives a variety of creative tasks for the children to choose from. Children only need to complete one task as a minimum, but can choose to complete more if they wish. Homework is due in on Friday 24th May.    

Spelling Shed
