One Childhood - One Chance

6Y Deduction and Inference

The children used both deduction and inference skills to find out more about the characters in the text. They used this to write character descriptions based on character traits.

Dooby was just a boy, yet he knew more fighting techniques than most grown adults, he has power and wants to control everyone on the island so they are completely obedient to him, unlike William, who couldn’t care about his position in the group, yet he is wise and kind, and wears his craziness like a mask so he could find somebody who was willing to listen. This person was Zoe, a confident girl who prefers to be alone, fragile on the surface but with a soul so guarded that she did trust anything or anybody in a hope that nobody could betray her. This could tell us that she has been betrayed by somebody in the past, yet she is slightly warming up to Munchkin.  Munchkin, like William, seems to wear a mask, a second conscience to make him seem different from anybody else, this was a mask of loyalty, loyalty to dooby, until Zoe found out he was anything but loyal, hiding secrets and maybe even planning. Although I described William's craziness as a mask, he seems to not trust too many people either, as he has used this mask so much that sometimes he forgets to take it off around Zoe at times, talking nonsense about doctors stepping in puddles and people becoming immortal. Sarah is a slightly confusing character, at first everybody saw her as a bully, a bully who has a crush on spat and is the sort of person who thinks their crush has returned feelings when they really don’t. When Zoe saw her with the pendant, I has a theory that maybe she traded the food because the necklace has a compass engraved in it, useful for when somebody like Zoe came with a boat. She is probably scaring Zoe so that when she tells Zoe about her maybe-true plan to escape she will keep quiet in fear of being bullied.

Dooby:

From what I have read I can tell that Dooby is a violent character even towards his closet assistants Spat and Munchkin. Dooby can be very controlling and is not the sort of person you would want to get in trouble with as he has some awful ways of fighting. But thought-out the book there has been certain aspects of him that are kind and helpful (the tribe would not know what to do without him). But in my opinion, he cannot be trusted as for he is planning to leave his tribe and escape on Zoes boat.

Munchkin:

I feel that Munchkin is a bit unsure what side he is on and what he is actually doing. He is a very cunning character because he keeps a hidey hole from his leader (Dooby). He also told Zoe where her boat was even though he shouldn’t have. Munchkin is the smallest of them all they describe him like a mouse but I think he is just as dangerous as the others. I think deep down munchkin can be trusted and wants to help instead of helping Dooby.

William:

William is definitely a very crazy man but smart at the same time. As the story goes on William has made good friends with Zoe and has been very loyal to her. I think he knows the most about the island then anybody does and personally I think he should the leader of the tribe. In a way he is a bit creative as for he can come up with a random story suddenly that he has just made up out of the blue but. On the other hand, he has been stuck on that island his whole life and knows what has happened to it over time.

Dooby:

We can clearly see from the text that Dooby is a selfish brat of a boy and leader. This leads us to infer that Dooby has been through a stage that people haven’t acted towards him nicely and has therefore thought it is ok to do it to other people. He is also an intimidating and threatening leader who only cares about himself. We can infer that he possibly has had a tough life when growing up so has taken it out on people that are completely innocent and has treated them unfairly all the time.

Munchkin:

We can clearly see that Munchkin is a shy character who doesn’t tend to  show his true self. We can deduce that Munchkin is a shy and quiet character and is hesitant to show his kind nature around Dooby. When he had the chat with Zoe we could tell that he wasn’t what he acted like around the selfish leader Dooby. He is also kind towards animals we can infer this because he has a pet rat and nobody else does they think that they are disgusting creatures, however he shows a kind nature towards them.

William:

It clearly states in the text that William is a crazy and indecisive character who yearns Zoe’s trust. This can lead us to infer that due to climate change the current conditions have affected his mental health and has made him one of the most joked about people on the island. William is well aware of Zoes feelings towards the island and has managed to gain her trust.
