This week, year 5 have started their new book for the term - The Firework Maker's Daughter by Phillip Pulman. The week started with children designing and then writing a set of instructions for their very own firework. We had Gigabolt Sparks and Exploding Insanities, Pheonix Feathers and Crackle Fizz Bangs, with ingredients ranging from bottled thunder to the tears of a unicorn. The creativity on display was something else and the writing was fantastic!

Later in the week, we moved on to a debate, as the father tells his daughter that she can't be a firework maker as she's a girl. This sparked a furious debate within the class with girls and boys in equal uproar as to the unfairness of such a statement. The class then wrote some very persuasive arguments on the subject. 

English lessons have been great fun this week! Very well done 5Y!
