Year 5 Weekly News - Friday 25/03/2022
English
In English this week, Year 5 have been writing to persuade. The week began with a persuasive speech based on a section of our text - Cosmic - where the main character Liam was persuading the other characters to vote for him to be the one chosen to go into space. Towards the end of the week, we have been looking at writing balanced arguments. The debate: is space exploration necessary? This has sparked some really interesting discussions in class on the pros and cons of space travel, space exploration and space tourism and is sure to produce some excellent writing (we'll be finishing these next week).
Maths
In maths this week, year 5 have started a new unit on decimals, making links between their fractions knowledge of tenths and hundredths and their understanding of place value.
UBBC
This week, rather than looking at space, we've been looking at Earth from space. We used digital technology (Google Earth) to help explore our understanding of the equator, tropics of Cancer and Capricorn, the arctic and antarctic circle and the north and south pole. We also learnt about the lines of longitude and latitude and used these to help us locate countries around the globe.
Home Learning Information
This week in our UBBC lessons, we got the chance to use Google Earth to explore our understanding of the equator, topics, northern and southern hemispheres and the poles. Google Earth is such a great geographical tool, and one that is fun to use, we thought we'd set you a Google Earth challenge this week. Using either the website (https://earth.google.com/) or the app which can be downloaded for free, can you use your knowledge of longitude and latitude to find what famous landmarks are located at the following coordinates:
51.5007° N, 0.1246° W
36.0544° N, 112.1401° W
29.9792° N, 31.1342° E
33.8568° S, 151.2153° E
48.8584° N, 2.2945° E
39.9169° N, 116.3907° E
27.1751° N, 78.0421° E
20.6843° N, 88.5678° W
Once you have discovered all 8 landmarks, choose one to create a fact file about. You can use the information contained within Google Earth itself, or you can use the internet to research.
Good luck and have fun exploring the globe!
