Home Learning:

This week we would like the children to research animal rights in our modern society, specifically exploring how animals are treated today. They can present this information about any animal (it could be an endangered species) they choose and present it however they would like. It could be a debate, a persuasive letter, a poster: whatever they like! Ensure this is in the children’s home learning book for teachers to celebrate next week.

Reading:

Minimum 3x a week. Reading record must be signed by an adult. Can be completed on your own or with your parents.

Spelling Shed:

Once a week – Friday to Friday. 

Tasks will be completed online, with new tasks set every week.

Tasks will always follow the spellings being taught in class that week. 

 Times Tables Rock Stars:

Can be completed on tablets, laptops or mobile phones though the app or the website.

Fieldwork around Broadstairs

On Tuesday, Year 5 set out to explore the local area in order to gain a wider understanding of land-use features in Broadstairs. As part of this trip, Year 5 created sketch maps based on the land-use features they had observed throughout the morning to link to their current geography learning.

As part of our investigation, we walked to areas such as: Thanet Wanderers, Joss Bay and North Foreland Lighthouse. During the trip, the children were asked to create sketch maps based on their observations of the area which they later used to create a larger map and present their findings to the whole class. Overall, Year 5 found this trip extremely exciting as it not only provided them with the opportunity to learn more about the area, but also to link their locality to their learning.

Sports Day

This week saw the return of Sports Day, where the children competed against other classes in a range of sporting events, such as the egg and spoon race and the infamous bouncy hopper relay. We are so proud of the resilience and enthusiasm of the children throughout the day, as they worked fantastically within their teams. It was great to see the strong sportsmanship between the children, who actively congratulated their peers on their successes! Congratulations to 5Y who were the overall winners of the afternoon!

English:

In English this week we continued to read, ‘When the Mountains Roar’. The children wrote some fantastic narratives to create tension and suspense for the reader using a range of literary devices.

Next week, we will be researching and writing an explanation text about endangered animals, specifically snow leopards.

Maths:

This week in maths we completed our learning on negative numbers. The children practised counting through zero and comparing negative numbers. We rounded off the week by completing an end-of-unit quiz!

Next week we will begin to explore converting between units of measurement, such as kilometres and kilograms.

Thematic Curriculum:

This week in our thematic curriculum, the children explored land-use features in our local area. In history, the children learnt about how hunting has varied throughout history, taking on a range of different functions in different context.

Next week, they will be writing a balanced argument about fox hunting, exploring the potential arguments for and against the event.
