Home Learning Task:

Attached below is the overarching Thematic Curriculum homework ideas. Please refer to the homework menu which give a variety of creative tasks for the children to choose from. Children only need to complete one task as a minimum but can choose to complete more if they wish.

English:

This week children have been looking at how to show not tell emotions. They have written two-character descriptions on the main characters of the text Floodland. We are thoroughly enjoying reading our text and are using reciprocal reading strategies to infer and clarify.

Next week we will be writing a speech about being the leader of the Island. Children will need to consider persuasive devices. Towards the end of the week, they will use oracy to read their speeches aloud to the class thinking about intonation and expression. We will see who the class chooses to be the leader of Eels Island based on the persuasive devices used in their speech.

 

Maths:

This week in maths we have been focusing on multiplying and dividing by 10,100 and 1000, factors, multiplies and primes and will finish off the week looking a derived facts.

 Next week, we will be moving onto to learning about short and long multiplication.  Please ensure children are accessing TTRS to learn their times tables as this underpins everything in maths.

Thematic Curriculum:

What a week we have had in our Thematic Curriculum lessons. Children had access to loan boxes from Quex Powell Cotton Museum and were able to observe, analyse, group, and classify the objects into categories. Children were lucky enough to hold and observe the different natural history specimens such as rhinoceros’ molar tooth, a collection of mounted butterflies, sheep horn, caiman skin, crocodile skin, rabbit skin, a replica chimpanzee skull, and a set of picture cards. This built on our learning of Charles Darwin’s discoveries, Evolution, and inheritance. 

 

Next week the children will be investigating the idea that broad groupings, such as micro-organisms, plants, and animals, can be sub-divided. Children will use and create their own classification key and get out into our environment to classify plants. Year 6 will discuss reasons why species are placed in one group and not another, recognise that living things produce offspring of the same kind, but understand that normally offspring vary and are not identical to their parents. 

Reading:

Minimum 3x a week. Reading record must be signed by an adult. Can be completed on your own or with your parents.

Spelling Shed:

Once a week – Friday to Friday. 

Tasks will be completed online, with new tasks set every week.

Tasks will always follow the spellings being taught in class that week. 

 

 Times Tables Rock Stars:

Minimum 3x a week.

Can be completed on tablets, laptops or mobile phones though the app or the website.
