Thematic

Our Year 6 children have shown themselves to be budding chefs during their exploration of the essential concepts of a balanced diet, including the delights of seasonal foods grown in the UK. Children have embraced the opportunity to explore the key components that make up a nutritious and well-rounded eating plan and have grasped the importance of incorporating a variety of food groups, but likewise, have gained an understanding of how each element contributes to their overall health and well-being.

The children have also had the chance to engage their senses, experiencing a variety of textures, flavours, and aromas, through food tasting sessions, whilst at the same time, exploring the nutritional value of the products they were tasting. Children also investigated the food miles of fruit and vegetables and have discussed the benefits and negative implications of importing foods from around the world. Through our hands-on learning, not only have our children expanded their palates, but they have also laid the groundwork for the upcoming culinary creations, that they will be producing on Monday. We can’t wait to share with you, what our children get up to!

 

 

          

Maths

This week, our mathematicians have been immersed in the captivating world of fractions. Children have been exploring the multiplication and division of proper fractions with integers. The week unfolded with children using bar models and area models to unravel the complexities of fractions, and in turn, deepening their understanding. Beyond the conventional procedural approach to multiplying and dividing, this week’s learning has encouraged children to think critically, and likewise, visualise fractions as dynamic entities, paving the way for a more profound comprehension of mathematical principles.

English

During English this week, children have been inspired further still, by our year group text: Skellig. Our young wordsmiths have immersed themselves in the craft of developing character descriptions, exploring characterisation techniques, specifically the use of language and vocabulary to build suspense and tension. The pieces of writing that our children have produced, have been nothing short of remarkable, reflecting both skill and imagination.

‘The Upton Way’ award

Congratulation to 6Y, who, last week, were recognised for showcasing the school’s core values, following school rules and displaying exceptional qualities, such as kindness, consideration and good manners. This week, the trophy has been awarded to another Year 6 class: 6R, who have demonstrated the Upton Way throughout the week, and have been fabulous role models in their contribution to a positive school culture. Well done to both classes! Can Year 6 hold onto the trophy next week? We are in no doubt that they will!

 Home Learning 

A very big ‘Shoutout’ goes to Lottie and Iris from 6Y for their tremendous efforts with their Home Learning. They have each gone above and beyond and have completed all tasks to an exceptionally high standard, including a variety of creative ways to present their tasks and their thinking. Their fabulous work has been celebrated this week, during our whole school celebration assembly- well done to both of you; you each should be incredibly proud!

We look forward to seeing all Home Learning books in on Friday 4^th February!

Attached below, is a reminder of the overarching Thematic Curriculum homework ideas. Please refer to the homework menu which gives a variety of creative tasks for the children to choose from. Children only need to complete one task as a minimum, but they can choose to complete more if they wish. Homework is due in on Friday 4^th February.  

Spelling Shed 

• Once a week: Friday to Friday. 
• Tasks to be completed online, with new tasks set every week. 
• Tasks will always follow the spellings being taught in class that week.

• Once a week: Friday to Friday.

Mathletics

 Reminder to ensure: 

• Children are wearing correct school uniform and shoes. 
• Children are bringing in their water bottles. 
• Coats are being worn to school. 
• Children are completing their Mathletics and Spelling Shed activities each week.

 Key messages: 

• Since the return to school, the weather has really taken a frosty turn. All children need to wear coats and gloves to school- we are asking all children to wear their coats out on the playground at breaktime and lunchtime.
•  PE days are Wednesdays.
• 6B and 6G are swimming on Friday afternoons.
