Termly Home Learning Task - Term 3: Marvels of Matter
This term in Year 5 we will be exploring our new topic, Marvels of Matter. In this component of our thematic curriculum, the children will be exploring the history of Anglo-Saxon Britain whilst also exploring states of matter in science. We would like the children to delve further into their history learning during their home learning by exploring one of these tasks. They may present their work in any way that they wish; it could be a presentation, poster, or something that they make, the possibilities are endless. This piece of work will need to be brought into school during the last week of term. If something is physically created, please can this be brought in or a photo stuck into books so we can celebrate the children’s success! Likewise, if your child creates something digital, feel free to email this to class teachers.
English:
In English this week we have been captivated, shocked and confused throughout our reading of ‘Anglo-Saxon Boy’. There have been twists and turns along the way and we can’t wait to read the next chapter. Our writing linked to the text has been a recount of Chapter 7 – Hail of Arrows. We focused on weaving dialogue, description and action throughout, ensuring we created a vivid image for the reader.
Next week we will be writing a newspaper article about Tostig’s exile and an internal monologue as Magnus.
Maths:
This week in maths we continued looking at fractions and introduced decimal equivalents. The children used Cuisenaire rods to convert between improper fractions and mixed numbers, and then represented them on a number line.
Next week we will conclude our fraction and decimal work with ordering decimals, rounding decimals and fractions with division.
Thematic Curriculum:
This week in our afternoon lessons we learnt all about Sutton Hoo – where it is and what was found. We also looked at the ancient epic poem of Beowulf. The children were absolutely gripped by the story told and enjoyed creating their own storyboards based on it. We finished the week with our Anglo-Saxon Wow Day. The children began the day with some drama and the retelling of the Anglo-Saxon settling in Britain. We then found out about what the Anglo-Saxons would have eaten and had a go at making honey shortbread. We learnt a new song, which we can’t wait to share with you next week. Finally, we made Anglo-Saxon style pendants and brooches out of clay. It was a fabulous day!
Next week we will conclude our Anglo-Saxon topic and would like to invite all parents and carers to our Celebration of Learning session, next Friday at 2.15pm. We hope to see you there.
