This week marked the beginning of an exciting new topic: Paths to peace. Our Year 6 children delved into the historical landscape, eager to uncover the events that shaped one of the most significant periods in human history: World War 2. Through historical enquiry, children began to piece together the intricate puzzle of the key events leading up to the war. Through discussion and research, children gained an insight into the complex web of political tensions, economic turmoil, and social upheaval that characterised the prelude to war. Children have gained a deep understanding of the chronological sequence of events, from the Treaty of Versailles to the invasion of Poland.

Maths:

This week in Maths, children have been estimating and comparing the volume of cubes and cuboids, and have showcased their ability to apply simple formulae and manipulate standard units with confidence and precision. Through real-world applications and practical challenges, they honed their mathematical skills and gained valuable insights into the practical significance of volume in everyday life.

English:

During our English lessons this week, our children have embraced the challenge of crafting flashback narratives that transport readers through time and space. Drawing inspiration from the poignant themes and rich visual imagery of "The Piano," they embarked on a journey of discovery, exploring the complexities of memory, loss, and resilience, linked to World War 2.

‘The Speaker’ competition

A huge well done and congratulations to all children, who have taken part in the Speaker heats, throughout the last two weeks. We would like to extend a heartfelt congratulations to all the participants for their hard work and courage in taking to the stage. The standard of speeches showcased by our Year 6’s has been nothing short of remarkable. Witnessing the children articulate themselves with such grace and confidence has been both inspiring and heart-warming, for both adults and children, alike. Each speech reflected not only the individuality of the speaker, but also their dedication and effort in honing their oracy skills. The standard of speeches is testament to how oracy is not just a stand-alone aspect of our education at Upton, but rather a golden thread, interwoven through all facets of school life.

Home Learning

Attached below is the overarching Thematic Curriculum homework ideas. Please refer to the homework menu which gives a variety of creative tasks for the children to choose from. Children only need to complete one task as a minimum, but can choose to complete more if they wish. Homework is due in on Friday 22^nd March.
