Termly Home Learning Task - Term 4: God and Mortals
This term in Year 5, our topic is Gods and Mortals. The children will be deepening their understanding of ancient Greece and will begin to think about the impact of this civilisation on our modern-day society. We would like the children to delve into the topic during their home learning by exploring one of these tasks. They may present their work in any way that they wish; it could be a presentation, poster, or something that they make, the possibilities are endless. This piece of work will need to be brought back into school during the last week of term. If something is physically created, please can this be brought in, or a photo stuck into books so we can celebrate the children’s success! Likewise, if your children create something digital, feel free to email this to class teachers.
We look forward to seeing what fabulous projects are created.
Here are some of the great projects we have received:
English:
In English this week we have been writing instructions for a brand new firework. This links with our new text ‘The Firework Maker’s Daughter’. This wonderful book is by Philip Pullman and details the struggle of Lila to become a firework maker like her dad. However, she has her best friend Chulak and the lucky white elephant, Hamlet (who can talk) at her side. Throughout our writing, we focused on including parenthesis (using brackets, dashes and commas) and colons and semicolons in lists.
Next week we will be focusing on using persuasive language to write a short speech and emotive language to write a letter.
Maths:
This week in maths we continued working with fractions. We learnt to add fractions with different denominators by finding a common denominator, and multiplied proper fractions and mixed numbers by an integer.
Next week we will be introducing percentages, starting by understanding the link to 100.
Thematic Curriculum:
This week we began our new Thematic topic: Gods and Mortals. We recapped the location of Greece today and what Ancient Greece looked like. We looked at Athens and Sparta and debated the question: ‘Is democracy essential to modern-day society?’ We finished the week by looking at Greek mythology and the importance of the gods and goddesses to the people. We shared some Greek myths and linked them to modern-day stories and situations.
