World Book Day

Without doubt, the highlight for us this week has been celebrating World Book Day!  The day saw our Year 6 children engaging in a whole host of activities, designed to ignite a passion and love of reading. Across the day, children were tasked with creating a ‘recommended read’ page for a class book. Armed with their favourite reads, children enthusiastically shared their literary discoveries with their classmates, providing captivating reviews to entice fellow readers.

But the creativity didn't stop there! Inspired by the power of words, our Year 6’s were challenged to develop quotes about reading, which they then presented as colourful works of art. Children also spent time with Year 3 reading buddies, sharing the joy of reading, as well as discussing their favourite reads.

The effort and enthusiasm displayed by our children throughout the day was truly commendable; their dedication to promoting a culture of reading, both within our school and beyond, serves as a testament to the profound impact that literature can have on young minds.

Thematic

During topic this week, children have been expanding their knowledge and understanding of the key events leading up to World War II. It has been incredibly rewarding to witness their engagement and enthusiasm as they delve deeper into this pivotal period of history. Through our lessons and activities, the children have been exploring the complex web of political, social, and economic factors that contributed to the outbreak of the war. They have been analysing significant events, studying the roles of key individuals and nations, and examining the impact of these developments on people around the world.

Maths

The children have been fully immersed in their learning about percentages, decimals, and fractions. Across the week, children have been exploring these interconnected concepts and developed strategies for finding percentages of amounts. Children have demonstrated a strong grasp of the fundamentals, tackling various problems and applying their understanding with confidence and enthusiasm.

English

This week, Year 6 have become intrepid reporters, documenting the extraordinary events surrounding Operation Pied Piper: a pivotal moment in history when thousands of children were evacuated to the countryside to safety just before the outbreak of World War II. Our young journalists have begun to craft their newspaper reports, weaving together facts, interviews, and personal reflections to capture the essence of this remarkable chapter in history. Through their writing, not only have they gained a deeper understanding of the past, but they have likewise discovered the power of storytelling to educate, inspire, and unite.

Reminder to ensure:

Key messages: 

• PE days are Wednesdays. 

• 6R and 6Y are swimming on Friday afternoons. 

• On Tuesday 12th March, 6B and 6G are visiting a local church during the afternoon. Children will need to bring a packed lunch on this day.

• Next week, Year 6 children will be completing practice SATs papers- please see the attached letter.

Home Learning 

Attached below is the overarching Thematic Curriculum homework ideas. Please refer to the homework menu which gives a variety of creative tasks for the children to choose from. Children only need to complete one task as a minimum, but can choose to complete more if they wish. Homework is due in on Friday 22nd March.
