This week in English, our classroom has been buzzing with excitement and inspiration as we delved into the captivating world of David Attenborough documentaries. The mesmerising visuals and compelling narratives have not only held the children spellbound, but have also set the stage for an exciting new writing project: crafting their own nature commentary.

We began by watching several excerpts from Attenborough's documentaries. As we watched, we discussed the elements that make his narrations so effective. With these insights, the children were eager to try their hand at writing, and began to plan a commentary for a well-known nature scene: Marine Iguana vs the Racer snake. The task was to write a commentary that could accompany the visuals, mirroring Attenborough's style. We started with a mind mapping session where children jotted down key points that they wanted to include in their voice-over; they thought carefully about what makes their chosen subject interesting and unique. Using their notes, they crafted engaging introductions to draw the listener in.

Next week, children will be expanding these introductions into full commentaries; the children will use descriptive language to bring their scenes to life, considering how their words would complement the visuals.

Maths

This week in Maths, our children have been involved in practical learning and real-world problem-solving. Our Year 6’s have been diving into open-ended investigations and tackling real-life scenarios that not only enhance their mathematical skills, but also prepare them for everyday challenges.

To kick off our week, we introduced the children to the concept of solving real-life problems using Maths. This approach helps them see the relevance of their mathematical knowledge and how it can be applied outside the classroom.  One of the key topics we explored was insurance. We discussed what insurance is, why it's important, and how it works. The children learnt about different types of insurance; children were then engaged in activities where they calculated insurance premiums. This exercise helped them understand the complexities involved in determining insurance costs and the importance of making informed decisions.

Next, we delved into the world of taxes. The children learnt about gross pay and how tax is deducted. Using simplified tax brackets and percentages, they practised calculating the amount of tax that would be deducted from a given gross salary. This hands-on activity not only improved their arithmetic skills but also gave them a glimpse into the financial responsibilities that come with earning an income.

Next week, children will continue to embed and apply their mathematical thinking through open-ended investigations that encourage them to think critically and creatively.

Personal Development

This week, our Year 6 children embarked on an inspiring and educational journey during our Personal Development Week. The focus was on exploring the world of enterprise and uncovering the attributes that define successful entrepreneurs. Through engaging activities, research, and discussions, our children gained valuable insights into what it takes to be an entrepreneur and how they can develop these qualities within themselves. The children learnt that enterprise is about identifying opportunities, taking risks, and turning ideas into successful ventures. We discussed various types of enterprises, from small businesses to large corporations, and the impact they have on our economy and society.

The next step was to delve into the attributes required to be an entrepreneur. We explored qualities such as creativity, resilience, risk-taking, problem-solving, and leadership. The children participated in interactive activities where they could identify these traits in themselves and their peers. This self-reflection helped them understand the importance of personal growth and the development of these attributes in their everyday lives.

To bring the concept of entrepreneurship to life, the children also studied well-known entrepreneurs from various fields. Each child chose an entrepreneur to research, examining their background, the challenges they faced, and the qualities that contributed to their success.

Next week, our Year 6’s will begin their Term 6 Thematic learning: Light it up! Our young scientists are set to embark on an exciting journey into the world of electricity and light. Through hands-on experiments, interactive lessons, and creative projects, children will gain a deeper understanding of how electricity and light shape our world.

Attached below is the overarching Thematic Curriculum homework ideas. Please refer to the homework menu which gives a variety of creative tasks for the children to choose from. Children only need to complete one task as a minimum, but can choose to complete more if they wish. Homework is due in on Friday 19^th June.
