13.09.24 Year 5 Weekly News

Week 2 in year 5

We have had a super busy week in year 5!

English

This week, the children have written an information text about four North American countries. They used their research from oracy week to build their text. We focused on culture, climate, food, physical and human features, wildlife and sport. The children also visited the library this week as part of their reading. They had the opportunity to listen to a local author and take out books if they had a library card. The two classes that missed their slot due to the weather on Monday, will have the opportunity at the beginning of October to visit.

Next week, we will begin reading our text, There's a Boy in the Girls' Bathroom. We are going to be writing two diary entries from the point of view of the main characters.

Maths

This week we have been learning about the value of digits in a 6-digit number. We have been ordering and comparing and rounding these numbers to the nearest 100, 1000 and 10,000.

Next week, we will move on to rounding and adjusting and using a variety of methods to add and subtract.

Thematic Curriculum

This week, the children have been learning about North America. We started the week with a timeline of colonisation events. We then plotted the countries and write key facts around a map of North America, linking to colonisation. This afternoon, the children are going to be learning about a range of artists from each country we have been learning about. This is a great cultural opportunity to see how art varies from country to country. Next week, the children are going to be learning about topographical features of each country, and comparing the use of farmland.

Homework

- Please read with your child at least 3 times a week.

- Most children have been given a ZPD to help them identify the correct books for their reading level. Once your child has read their book, they will need to complete a quiz on it before getting a new one. These quizzes can be done either in school or at home on Accelerated Reader using the log-in codes found in their reading records.

Welcome (renaissance-go.com)

- Children should be playing TTRS at least 3 times a week to build their confidence and fluency with time-table knowledge.

- Mathletics homework has also been set for the children to complete by next Friday.

- Please see the homework menu attached for our thematic homework. This can be completed in the homework book provided if you wish.
