Year 6 Weekly News 18.10.24
This week in Year 6...
English
This week, we finally finished reading our text Floodland. The children have been so engaged with the story; it’s been such a pleasure to read the book with them and see their reactions to the ending! They then set about planning and writing a newspaper article detailing the final events.
Maths
This week we have introduced long division. We have spent lots of time modelling each step and practising as our confidence grows.
Next week learning in the mornings will be slightly different. Please see the letter below for details:
SATs familiarisation
Dear Parents/Carers,
Next week, the children will be completing a series of SATs papers in reading, maths and SPaG (Spelling, punctuation and Grammar), the timetable is detailed at the bottom of this letter. The purpose of these days is not to test the children but to familiarise the children with the construct of the test papers. The children will not be given these test papers in test conditions and therefore, outcomes of the tests will not be shared. We understand that children often worry about SATs, so we are giving them this experience for familiarisation and reassurance.
Later in the academic year we will organise three days of testing to reflect rooms and procedures that are planned for the actual SATs in May. Finally, the most important thing approaching the SATs is that your child is happy. At this end, we will only ever ask them to do their best and we are sure that you will be reinforcing this message at home.
If you have any further questions, please do ask your child’s class teacher.
Yours sincerely
Year 6 Team
Thematic Curriculum
This week, the children had the opportunity to learn and practise CPR under the guidance of two instructors from Kent Fire and Rescue Service. We also worked in groups to research and create a poster detailing Darwin's contributions to our understanding of life.
Next week we will continue our work exploring our religion of the term, Judaism.
Homework
- Please read with your child at least 3 times a week.
- Children should be playing TTRS at least 3 times a week to build their confidence and fluency with times table knowledge.
- Children have been given a ZPD to help them identify the correct books for their reading level. Once your child has read their book, they will need to complete a quiz on it before getting a new one. These quizzes can be done either in school or at home on Accelerated Reader using the log-in codes found in their reading records.
Welcome (renaissance-go.com)
- Mathletics homework has also been set for the children to complete by next Friday.
