English:
In English this week we have started to read our new text: I Survived the Eruption of Mt St Helens, 1980. It is a fictional book about the true events of Mount St. Helens erupting in the Cascade Mountains of Washington, USA. The children have been thoroughly gripped by the story and cannot wait to read more. In writing, we wrote a character description of the Skeleton Woman, a mystical character who is believed to have cursed the mountain. We focused on using fronted adverbials and exciting adjectives.
Next week, we will write a comparative setting description of Mount St. Helens, before and after the eruption.
Maths:
This week in maths we revisited multiplication and division. Our focus was on using the bus stop method to divide 2 and 3-digit numbers by a single digit.
Next week we will be starting a new unit – fractions.
Thematic Curriculum:
This week during our afternoon lessons, we explored diversity and national charities. The children carried out their own research for different charities that interested them to find out more about their work. We also began our new topic: Cracking the Earth’s Core; a topic all about volcanoes and earthquakes. We used digestive biscuits and frosting to show how the plates interact at plate boundaries.
On Monday, we had a successful STEM morning where we invited visitors to talk to the children about their STEM-related job. We met 2 engineers, an aircraft crew member and a geotechnical engineer. Thank you to all of those who participated. The children learnt about the world of STEM.
Next week we will continue to explore charities and will delve further into volcanoes.
