Term 3: Cracking the Earth’s Core

This term in Year 4 we are exploring plate tectonics, earthquakes and volcanoes - how they are formed, where they are found and the consequences of them. We would like the children to delve into the topic during their home learning by exploring one of these tasks, or a related task of their choosing. They may present their work in any way that they wish; it could be a presentation, poster, or something that they make, the possibilities are endless. This piece of work will need to be brought back into school before the last week of term. If something is physically created, please can this be brought in or a photo stuck into books so we can celebrate the children’s success!

Please bring in any Thematic homework before the end of term.

Here are some more of the great projects we have received:

English:

In English this week we looked at different poems and performed some in groups. Then, we wrote poems about volcanoes using different poetic devices and figurative language.

Next week we will write a non-chronological report about volcanoes, using what we have learnt this term.

Maths:

This week in maths we calculated with fractions, including adding and subtracting fractions with like denominators.

On Friday, we had Number Day, and we dressed up in numbers or as rock stars. We dedicated the morning to maths and the children explored different maths puzzles including the Tower of Hanoi, completed escape rooms and played maths-related games.

Next week we will complete our fraction unit by adding and subtracting fractions above 1 and comparing quantities of amounts.

Thematic Curriculum:

This week during our afternoon lessons, we explored the stability of structures by designing a building that could withstand an earthquake. We used a range of materials to build a structure that was at least 50 cm tall and then tested its stability by simulating a mini earthquake.

Next week we will explore the religion of Buddhism during our afternoon lessons.
