We’re inviting children and young people to have a go on the stage at the Theatre Royal, to stand on it and recite a poem or short speech of their choice. It’s the best view of the theatre from the stage, and we want you to have a chance to enjoy that and see how amazing it feels to speak out clearly and loudly to an audience.

This will help children get a sense of confidence and strength of voice in verbal communication, as required by the Curriculum.

There will be a drama leader to look after everyone coming on stage, and giveaways for all that have a go. If possible, schools might like to use Geraldine McCaughrean’s superb book

 

‘The Positively Last Performance’ as their source material. She was asked to write a book based on the Theatre Royal and researched with Margate people to create a fascinating tale for young people about past inhabitants of an old theatre, friendly ghosts, and how they fight to save the building from the developers!. Geraldine has written over 150 books for young people, published by Oxford University Press.

The Open Day follows the success of last year’s Party Day at Margate’s Theatre Royal, and takes place on Sunday 9 March from 10am – 4pm.

Both the Theatre Royal and the Winter Gardens will be open to the public, with chance to explore all the bits you don’t usually see! There are backstage tours, activities, talks and exhibitions as well as free refreshments and lots of prizes! Entry is free all day, and there’s a free shuttle bus between the venues.

 

To take part, just turn up on the day!
