A freshly transformed library is a new chapter in the love of literacy at Upton Juniors in Broadstairs.

When children returned after the Christmas break they were excited to discover the popular resource centre had been thoughtfully upgraded to create a more inviting space.

The key aim is to offer a welcoming haven where pupils can read and relax and enjoy exploring the worlds of fact and fiction stocked on shelf after shelf.

The library is open every day with the Year 6 librarians promoting reading and reading with others. It will also be used throughout the school day by classes and children can take books home.

All the books have been co-ordinated thanks to the staff working diligently to provide a well-organised and exciting space in which to share stories.

Assistant Head of School Gemma Scarr is English lead at Upton. She said: “Reading truly is the golden thread that runs through everything we do as a school and now we have a new, fabulous space to promote our love of reading.

“The children are so excited to use the space and once again it has ignited the school’s love of reading.

“Our Year 6 librarians have key roles as they are instrumental in sharing their love of reading and promoting a range of books with the rest of the school.”

The ongoing literacy drive has seen the school’s recently-elected Reading Ambassadors sharing their passion with young pupils at nearby St Mildred’s Infants as part of a wider community engagement planned for the coming year.

Head of School Darci Arthur said: “Literacy is a core part of the school’s learning and all ages are actively encouraged to explore the wide and varied world of information and entertainment books give them.

“Our beautiful new library adds an extra dimension to our learning. It is a special space which is comfy and has a tranquil ambience. The feedback from children has been so positive – it really is developing into a widely-used central hub within our community.”
