Digging Deep Into Stone Age History
Young children exploring the Stone Age at Upton Juniors have been led on a voyage of discovery by a special guest archaeologist.
Alex McAuley – Head of School at Chilton Primary in Ramsgate which is part of the Viking Academy Trust with Upton – is a former archaeologist.
He used all his professional experience to guide the Year 3 group through a special workshop to delve deep into history and explore the world of ancient artefacts.
As part of a themed WOW Day filled with creativity, exploration, and hands-on learning, classrooms were transported back in time to the Stone Age, where history was brought to life through art and crafts.
In the workshop pupils were expertly guided through a range of ancient artefacts, learning how to analyse and interpret them.
They were tasked with using evidence to sort objects into different time periods, using the same basic methods used by archaeologists. They carefully examined each item, discussing its significance and imagining what life might have been like for the people who created and used them.
The year group also designed their own cave paintings, created period jewellery using clay, and made pottery by moulding clay into simple bowls and vessels reminiscent of Stone Age ceramic work.
Head of Year 3 Becky Andrews said: “Our WOW Day was a truly immersive experience that allowed children to connect with history in a unique and engaging way.
“The combination of archaeology, arts, and crafts sparked curiosity and creativity, offering everyone a chance to learn by doing.”
Head of School Darci Arthur agreed and added: “Mr McAuley was superb in the way he encouraged deeper understanding and critical thinking about the Stone Age, encouraging children to see the period through his eyes as an archaeologist.
“It offered them such a valuable insight for their themed learning about a fascinating period in the history of the world.”
