PE and Sport has traditionally been an area of strength at Upton. The school hold the Platinum School Games Mark that kitemarks the highest standards of PE and Sport in the UK. Upton are also one of just 40 Beacon Schools for the GetSet Olympic movement in the UK and closer to home have recently been awarded the Sustained Excellence award within the District, recognising excellence across the last decade.
At Upton all pupils have access to two hours of high quality PE lessons each week. These lessons are taught both by the class teacher, maintaining an important link between immediate role models and sport, and our specialist sports and swimming coaches. In addition, the school has its own swimming pool on staff, and all pupils swim for six months of every year at the school to ensure they reach their 25m milepost before leaving.
Intent: We aim to offer pupils a wide range of PE experience both inside and outside the curriculum. We aim to follow the National Curriculum and to ensure that all pupils develop competence in a broad range of physical activities, are physically active for sustained periods of time, engage in competitive sports and activities, and know how to lead healthy, active lives
By working in a variety of contexts on their own, in groups and in teams, students learn to work both independently and collaboratively. By participating as performers, leaders and officials, students develop the ability to communicate effectively in a range of ways, both verbally and non-verbally. They also learn to listen and act on what they hear, understand and appreciate alternative viewpoints, and learn to compromise, particularly when working in pairs or groups
