Music
Our Vision - Excellence in Music‘
Music is the perfect vehicle for learning’- Youth Music .
It increases language, helps to develop communication, maths, listening, concentration and social skills. It also increases a child's confidence.
Our school motto -
'One Childhood, One Chance'
- means that we have the opportunity, right now, to develop a lifelong love of music in our pupils.
We are proud of our reputation as a school that values and invests in Music education. Our excellence in music provision complements the importance we invest in creativity across the curriculum. This commitment to high quality music was recognised in 2018, when we were award the Music Mark.
At Upton, children learn Music through the medium of instrumental tuition, with each year group focusing on a different instrument - recorder and percussion / violin / ukulele / keyboard. Through the instrument, children learn to focus their listening skills, develop basic playing and performance skills, create simple compositions and improvisations as well as regular singing and movement based around the study. Children also learn about the breadth of musical history, from Bach to Iron Maiden, from Folk to Funk, from Rock to Rap!
Within the school, singing is at the core of our Music education. Weekly singing assemblies give all children the chance to sing songs from various genres, cultures and traditions, widening their experience and understanding. This also provides an additional opportunity to aid the development of vocabulary. Singing also underpins every music lesson, both for its own sake and for building an internal voice to aid the learning of instruments. Our clubs provision expands this with a choir of 60 children regularly performing at a range of venues and our more informal Singing club which annually takes part in the Young Voices concert at the O2 Arena.
At Upton, we believe singing is a key way to express feelings and emotions, develop confidence and enhance our children's lives.
Upton is widely respected for its development of musical excellence and we seek to continue this and build upon it.
