07.03.25 Year 3 Weekly News

An amazing week in Year 3!
World Book Day
This week, the school was buzzing with excitement as we celebrated World Book Day with a variety of fun and engaging activities. The joy of reading was truly alive as children immersed themselves in creative and inspiring tasks designed to foster a love for books and storytelling.
Children in Year 3 decorated stones with words and images, designed to celebrate and promote a love of reading. We then placed them around the school for others to find. These beautifully crafted stones not only sparked curiosity but also encouraged children to expand their book corners with meaningful literary treasures.
Another exciting project was the creation of reading identity posters. Each child had the opportunity to reflect on what makes them a reader, designing personal posters showcasing their favourite books, characters, and reading habits.
Of course, no World Book Day celebration would be complete without story time sessions. Throughout the morning, children in Year 3 had the opportunity to pair up with their Year 6 reading buddy to enjoy a book. Teachers from around the school also visited classes for a story time session. The joy and enthusiasm in each session were truly heart-warming, reinforcing the importance of storytelling and imagination.
World Book Day has once again reminded us of the power of books to transport, inspire, and connect us. We are thrilled to have shared this special day with our children and look forward to continuing to nurture a lifelong love of reading in our school community!
Thematic
This week, our thematic learning focus has been Geography, with an emphasis on Italy. The children have been producing sketch maps of Italy, carefully including a key and labelling important cities, seas, and mountains. This activity has not only helped them refine their map-making skills but also deepened their understanding of Italy’s geographical features.
In History, we have embarked on a fascinating journey into the past, exploring the growth of the Roman Empire. The children have investigated how the Romans expanded their influence across Europe and, in particular, how they established their presence in Britain. A key area of focus has been the Roman roads and towns that played a crucial role in connecting settlements and facilitating trade. Through interactive discussions and activities, the children have discovered how Roman engineering and town planning continue to shape parts of Britain today.
Next week, we will be exploring how Britain became part of the Roman Empire. The children will investigate the Roman invasion, the resistance from Celtic tribes, and the impact of Roman rule.
English
In English, children have been honing their descriptive writing skills by crafting character descriptions of a Celt, inspired by the text Revolt Against the Romans. They have worked hard to bring these historical figures to life through vivid language, focusing on appearance, personality, and historical context. This activity has helped them develop a deeper understanding of the Celts while enhancing their ability to use rich and engaging vocabulary.
Looking ahead to next week, we will be focusing on recount writing, where the children will be crafting a battle scene. Using their knowledge of the Romans and Celts, they will bring history to life through action-packed narratives, descriptive details, and powerful storytelling techniques. We can't wait to see their creativity shine!
Maths
In Maths, children have been developing their understanding of multiplication and division. They have been learning how to multiply and divide by 10 and exploring related multiplication and division facts. Through practical activities and problem-solving tasks, they have strengthened their numerical fluency and deepened their grasp of these essential mathematical concepts.
Looking ahead to next week, children will be using written methods to solve multiplication and division calculations. They will apply their understanding to tackle more complex problems, developing their confidence in using formal written strategies.
