One Childhood - One Chance

28.03.25 Year 3 Weekly News

Another busy week in Year 3!

Thematic

In Thematic this week, Year 3 have been exploring the legacy of the Romans and their lasting impact on Britain. Using research from a range of sources, children have pieced together an informative and engaging non-chronological report highlighting key aspects of Roman influence, including: Roman architecture, military prowess, daily life, roads, currency and language. They also designed eye-catching diagrams and fact boxes to make their work informative and visually appealing. Through this project, our Year 3 children have developed essential research and writing skills while deepening their understanding of the Romans’ influence. Their ability to organise information and present it effectively is a testament to their hard work and enthusiasm for history. We also explored the fall of the Roman Empire as part of our learning and how it eventually came to an end. Children examined the key reasons for its decline, including economic troubles, invasions by barbarian tribes, and internal conflicts.

Our Year 3 historians have shown incredible curiosity and dedication throughout this topic. Their exploration of the Romans' legacy has not only enriched their knowledge but also inspired them to think critically about the past and its influence on our present-day society.

English

This week in English, we have been learning how to write newspaper reports using a formal tone. We’ve explored the key features, such as headlines, quotes, and have likewise explored language features. Our focus has been on the shocking betrayal of the Celts by Queen Cartimandua. We have written exciting reports about how she tricked Caradoc and secretly helped the Romans.  Everyone worked really hard to include powerful quotes and dramatic language to make our reports interesting to read. Well done, Year 3!

Next week in English, we will be writing a handbook on how to become a Roman soldier! We will be learning about the strict training, powerful weapons, and strong armour that made the Roman army so successful. We will further explore what it takes to be a soldier, from marching long distances to following orders with discipline. Our handbooks will include step-by-step instructions, top tips, and key facts to help any new recruit join the mighty Roman army!

Maths

This week in Maths, we have been learning how to tell the time to the nearest minute. We’ve been practising reading analogue clocks and making sure we can say the correct time with confidence. To aid learning, children have taken part in lots of fun practical activities using clocks and have likewise spent time working with partners to quiz each other.

Next week in Maths, we will continue our learning of time, and will be exploring digital time. We will be learning how to read and understand both 12-hour and 24-hour time, making sure we can confidently match digital times with analogue clocks.
