Termly Home Learning Task - Term 1: Make Some Noise

This term in Year 4 we are exploring sound - how we hear and what sound waves look like. We would like the children to delve into the topic during their home learning by exploring one of these tasks, or a related task of their choosing. They may present their work in any way that they wish; it could be a presentation, poster, or something that they make, the possibilities are endless. This piece of work will need to be brought back into school before the last week of term. If something is physically created, please can this be brought in, or a photo stuck into books so we can celebrate the children’s success!

We look forward to seeing more fabulous projects.

English:

In English this week we wrote an information text as a double page spread. The children researched Tobago and wrote about the food and the location as well as the weather and places to visit. They used organisational features like subheadings and paragraphs.

Next week we will begin our new book: Leon and the Place Between.

Maths:

This week in maths we used different strategies to add and subtract 4-digit numbers mentally. The strategies we looked at were partitioning, round and adjusting, counting on and near doubles.

Next week we will continue with adding and subtracting but using the column method.

Thematic Curriculum:

This week we focused on carrying out an experiment to answer our key question: how can you measure the link between the loudness of a sound and the height from which something is dropped? We planned the experiment by discussing how we could make it a fair test and predicting what might happen. We completed an observational drawing of the set-up and recorded our results in a table. Finally, we concluded that the higher the height from which a marble is dropped, the louder the sound produced. The children also thought about ways the experiment could be improved if they were to do it again.

Next week we will look at how we can protect our ears from loud noises.
