Termly Home Learning Task - Term 1: Make Some Noise
This term in Year 4 we are exploring sound - how we hear and what sound waves look like. We would like the children to delve into the topic during their home learning by exploring one of these tasks, or a related task of their choosing. They may present their work in any way that they wish; it could be a presentation, poster, or something that they make, the possibilities are endless. This piece of work will need to be brought back into school before the last week of term. If something is physically created, please can this be brought in, or a photo stuck into books so we can celebrate the children’s success!
We look forward to seeing some fabulous pieces.
English:
In English this week we wrote a setting description of the circus tent and nearby fairground. We started to read our new book – Leon and the Place Between – and the children are hooked already. It is a beautifully illustrated picture book full of magic. The focus of our writing was to use exciting and vivid vocabulary, as well as expanded noun phrases. To immerse ourselves within our book further, we acted out sections of the book to imagine how the children felt before the show started.
* The children were supposed to be acting disappointed and bored!*
Next week we will be writing a character description of Abdul Kazam and will begin to look at play scripts.
Maths:
This week in maths we were using the column method to solve addition and subtraction calculations. We looked at bar models which were linked to the calculations.
Next week we will continue with adding and subtracting, but through word problems.
Thematic Curriculum:
This week we focused on designing and making ear defenders. We learnt that loud noises above 85 dB can seriously affect our hearing, so the children investigated different materials that reduced the volume of sounds. The materials they tried were fur, sponge, felt, paper and cotton wool. They used pipe cleaners for the headbands and cup lids for the frame. All of the children were extremely proud of the final product they produced.
Next week we will look at sound in the environment, including our BSL workshops on Friday.
