Term 4: Innovation Station
This term in Year 4 we are learning about the ancient inventions of the Islamic world and how we still use some of the products today. We will be learning about the Silk Road and how trade played a crucial role in the innovation of new ideas. We will also be exploring electricity, including circuits and how different materials can be classified as insulators or conductors. We would like the children to delve into the topic during their home learning by exploring one of these tasks, or a related task of their choosing. They may present their work in any way that they wish; it could be a presentation, poster, or something that they make. The possibilities are endless. This piece of work will need to be brought into school before the last week of term. If something is physically created, please can this be brought in or a photo stuck into books so we can celebrate the children’s success!
Please bring in any Thematic homework before the end of term.
English:
In English this week we wrote a letter as Edward to describe what he has been through after Lolly threw him out. We used different sentence openers to make our writing more captivating and used emotive language to portray Edward’s thoughts and feelings. We explored how Edward is developing and changing over time to become more empathetic and understanding towards others.
Next week we will be writing a series of diary entries from the point of view of another character – Bryce – to detail the events of his life.
Maths:
This week in maths we continued looking at decimals. We rounded to the nearest whole amount, added and subtracted decimals with tenths using number bonds and mental strategies, and introduced hundredths. We used concrete (manipulatives) and pictorial representations to help our understanding of methods.
Next week we will continue to calculate with hundredths.
Thematic Curriculum:
During our afternoon sessions this week we were introduced to electricity and how it flows through a circuit. We made circuits that included a bulb, a battery and a switch, and tested the effects of increasing the number of bulbs/ batteries in the circuit. We also used a program on the computer called TinkerCAD. This is a program that allows you to design a range of items before attempting to make them. We finished the week with some RE, where we learnt about the Easter story in more detail.
Next week we will continue with our topic: Innovation Station, where our focus will be on DT.
Red Nose Day:
Today, the children enjoyed dressing up in red or in 80s wear to raise money for Comic Relief. We celebrated by holding an 80s disco, where parents were invited in to boogie with their children. The BBC also got involved and came to video the event, which should be shown as part of the South East news at 18:30 tonight.
