One Childhood - One Chance

7.3.25 Year 5 Weekly News

Term 4 Week 2

English

This week, the children created a descriptive wanted poster for Thanatos, Daemon of death, from our story. After this, they wrote a news report about his escape. The focus was to recount events using subordinate clauses. The children continued reading their class text, created comprehension questions and acted out a scene from the book. Next week, we are writing a character description of Zeus and an internal monologue from Thanatos's point of view. We will be focusing on ambitious vocabulary and emotive language.

Maths

This week, the children have been adding and subtracting fractions with different denominators and converting mixed numbers to improper fractions. Next week, they will be adding and subtracting mixed number fractions using converting.

Thematic

This week, we started our thematic topic, 'Gods and Mortals.' They children learnt about how Ancient Greeks influenced our modern world through their inventions. They also learnt about Athens and Sparta and their similarities and differences. Using this knowledge, they held a debate in the hall, to argue why their state was the better one. Next week, the children will be learning about Gods and Goddesses, acting out myths and learning about the Parthenon.
