21.3.25 Year 5 Weekly News

Term 4 Week 4

English

This week, the children have been focusing on writing a narrative, focusing on action, dialogue and description. The children have been writing Virgo's journey from Elysium down to Earth. Next week, the children are finishing their stories and then editing and improving. Towards the end of the week, we are going to be planning our non-fiction write for the following week. Our PAG focus this week has been parenthesis. 

Maths

This week, the children have been learning about percentages. They have converted fractions into percentages and decimals. Next week, the children are going to be finding fractions of amounts and problem-solving with percentages. The children will be starting their new unit of translations towards the end of the week. 

Thematic 

This week, the children learnt about the Parthenon. They wrote tour guide speeches to explain the facts about the Parthenon. Towards the end of this week, we have been focusing on writing a persuasive speech about the most important Greek invention that we still use today. Next week, we are beginning our DT project. 

Sir Link Alot

This week, year 5 are recapping homophones.

DT Day

The children will be carrying out a DT day on Tuesday. This will be planned, built and evaluated. Their task will be to make a CAMS Greek theatre. DT day will be full of cross-curricular links, from measuring angles and rotations to writing instructions.

WOW day

On Wednesday, the children are invited to dress up for Greek WOW day. This will be a day of immersing ourselves into Ancient Greek life. We will be food tasting, creating pottery artwork, acting, participating in the Olympics and also learning some traditional Greek dancing.

Homework

- Please read with your child at least 3 times a week.

- All children have been given a ZPD to help them identify the correct books for their reading level. Once your child has read their book, they will need to complete a quiz on it before getting a new one. These quizzes can be done either in school or at home on Accelerated Reader using the log-in codes found in their reading records.

Welcome (renaissance-go.com) 

- Children should be playing TTRS at least 3 times a week to build their confidence and fluency with time-tables knowledge.

- Mathletics homework has also been set for the children to complete by next Friday.

- Please see the homework menu attached for our thematic homework. This can be completed in the homework book provided if you wish.
