One Childhood - One Chance

Weekly news! 22.09.2023

We have had a very busy week in Year 4 this week, let’s see what we have been up to.

English

In English this week, we have finished our first book, Gregory Cool.  We have been writing a comparative setting description of Tobago and Broadstairs. On Friday, we began doing research to gather information for a non-chronological report about Tobago. We have also been learning about word classes:

Nouns – People, places or things.

Adjectives – Describing words.

Verbs – Doing words.

Adverbs – Words that describe verbs.

We will be continuing our non-chronological report writing next week, with the aim of publishing a complete non-chronological report, using all our key skills.

Maths

Our Maths learning this week has been focused on addition. The children have learnt different ways of adding, including adding using partition, adding using Base 10 (or dienes) and adding using a number line. The children have excelled themselves with their effort and have really impressed us with their independent and shared work.

Next week we will be moving on to subtraction, so make sure you are practising those number bonds!

Thematic

Our Thematic learning this week has been mostly Science learning. On Monday, we learnt al about sound waves and how they change with different pitches and volumes. The children displayed their learning by creating some sound wave art based off a piece of music. We then moved on to learn about how we hear sounds and the parts of the ear. Finally, we investigated how to alter the volume of sounds. We used a drum and an oscilloscope to see what happened to the sound waves when we used different amounts of force to hit the drum.

Love to Learn

READING: Children in Year 4 are expected to read at home at least three times a week. It is really important that the children bring in their reading records daily so that we can check in with progress and read with the children in school. Please read as often as possible at home. Thank you for your support.

THEMATIC: We would like you to tell us/show us how we hear sounds/what affects the pitch and volume of sounds/how vibrations travel through different materials.

Reminders:

The expectation of uniform is that hair is tied back if it is below the shoulders. Hoodies (apart from those provided by the school) are not permitted and children should be wearing school shoes, not trainers apart from on PE days. PE kit should be navy or black with their house colour t-shirt.

Tuesday afternoon is swimming for 4B and 4G

Thursday afternoon is PE
