Termly Home Learning Task - Term 3: Marvels of Matter
This term, in Year 5, we will be exploring our new topic, Marvels of Matter. In this component of our thematic curriculum, the children will be exploring the history of Anglo-Saxon Britain whilst also exploring states of matter in science. We would like the children to delve further into their history learning during their home learning by exploring one of these tasks. They may present their work in any way that they wish; it could be a presentation, poster, or something that they make, the possibilities are endless. This piece of work will need to be brought into school during the last week of term. If something is physically created, please can this be brought in or a photo stuck into books so we can celebrate the children’s success! Likewise, if your child creates something digital, feel free to email this to class teachers.
We look forward to seeing what fabulous projects are created.
English:
In English this week we began reading our new text: Anglo-Saxon Boy and we are gripped already. We have been introduced to the main character - Magnus - and what potentially lies in wait for him as the story progresses. We wrote three different versions of the prologue, each with a different focus: description, action and dialogue. We finished the week off by using drama to bring the story to life and used body language and facial expressions to convey the emotions of different characters.
Next week we will be writing a setting description and a character description, making sure that we use expanded noun phrases and prepositions.
Maths:
This week in maths we finished our area and perimeter unit and completed our post-unit quiz. Today, we started looking at fractions and drew different representations of them. We looked at fractions on number lines, as a group, in words and as pictorial representations.
Next week we will continue to look at what fractions are, comparing their values and finding equivalents.
Thematic Curriculum:
This week we began our new topic about the Anglo-Saxons. We looked at where they came from and why they wanted to settle in Britain. To help us understand their way of living, we made 3D models of an Anglo-Saxon farm using a range of materials from lolly sticks to raffia. There was a great maths link too; we used nets to build houses and barns, trees and animals.
Next week we will continue to delve into the world of Anglo-Saxons by looking at the different kingdoms of England and Christianity.
