Termly Home Learning Task - Term 5: Tides of Change
This term in Year 5 we have been exploring our new topic, Tides of Change. In this component of our thematic curriculum, the children have been delving into the history as well as the human and physical geography of their local area! We would like the children to immerse themselves in the topic during their home learning by exploring one of these tasks, or a task of their choosing which links. They may present their work in any way that they wish; it could be a presentation, poster, or something that they make, the possibilities are endless. This piece of work will need to be brought back into school by the last week of term. If something is physically created, please can this be brought in or a photo stuck into books so we can celebrate the children’s success!
Can children please ensure that their homework is brought in by the last week of this term.
English:
In English this week we have written a series of diary entries from Jim’s point of view. These covered the events from when Jim entered the workhouse and ultimately escaped, being reunited with Rosie and then being sold to Grimy Nick. The children used correct verb tenses and a lot of thoughts and feelings to bring the emotions to life. We finished the week by completing a Big Write, where the children showed off their fabulous writing skills by describing a new dream that could be included in the short film ‘Dream Giver’.
Next week we will be writing about events from different viewpoints.
Maths:
This week in maths we continued with our calculations involving decimals. We have added decimal numbers using manipulatives, e.g. place value counters, and used our mental calculations to play adding and subtracting games. We finished the week by using the column method to add and subtract decimals and linked this method to when we calculate with integers.
Next week we will continue calculating with decimal numbers by introducing multiplying.
Thematic Curriculum:
This week, our afternoon lessons had a history focus, specifically Operation Dynamo and the role Ramsgate played in it. The children were fascinated to learn about a snippet of World War II and how Operation Dynamo was pivotal to the survival of over 338,000 soldiers of a range of nationalities. They wrote a historical account of what happened, including the key people who were involved (Vice Admiral Bertram Ramsay and Winston Churchill).
Next week we will be getting hands on with a range of science experiments to explore different forces.
