Key Messages: for next week…

• Monday is PE for all of Year 5. Please send the children in wearing their PE kit.
• Thursday is swimming for 5B and 5G. Please ensure that full swimming kit is brought in on that day. If your child cannot take part, please contact their teacher or the office to explain why.
• Children can come to school in their PE kit on swimming days.
• Please ensure children are wearing correct school uniform and shoes, including a tie.
• Please ensure children are bringing in their water bottles every day, preferably with a sports cap.

Children will be completing their CATs next week on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. These are computer-based assessments designed to test the children’s ability to reason with numbers and words. Results will be sent to parents once they have been collated. To reassure the children, the CATs are just like when they take their AR Star tests at the beginning of each term. If you would like more information, please contact your child’s class teacher or Miss Lewis as Head of Year.

Termly Home Learning Task - Term 5: Tides of Change

This term in Year 5 we have been exploring our new topic, Tides of Change. In this component of our thematic curriculum, the children have been delving into the history as well as the human and physical geography of their local area! We would like the children to immerse themselves in the topic during their home learning by exploring one of these tasks, or a task of their choosing which links. They may present their work in any way that they wish; it could be a presentation, poster, or something that they make, the possibilities are endless. This piece of work will need to be brought back into school by the last week of term. If something is physically created, please can this be brought in or a photo stuck into books so we can celebrate the children’s success!

Can children please ensure that their homework is brought in by the last week of this term.

English:

In English this week we finished our class text – Street Child. It had some sad parts but ended on a happy note. We also explored the background of Barnardo’s children’s charity, the real-life story that Street Child is based on. The children wrote some monologues to show the differing points of view of the same event and wrote from the perspectives of the characters: Rosie, Jim and Grimy Nick.

Next week we will be writing a newspaper report about the opening of the first boy’s home on Stepney Causeway.

Maths:

This week in maths we solved some problems involving addition and subtraction of decimals and began to look at multiplying decimals using the area model and grid method. We used place value counters to help us with our calculations.

Next week we will conclude our unit on decimals by completing more problems involving multiplication and will complete our post-unit quiz.

Thematic Curriculum:

This week we had a science focus for our afternoon lessons. The children investigated friction, gravity, air resistance, water resistance and upthrust through a range of experiments. They tested the buoyancy of multiple objects and we discussed how to reduce the effects of these forces. The children absolutely loved the hands-on activities on offer and could explain their findings using the key vocabulary.

Next week we will be learning more about the religion of Islam during our afternoon lessons.
