Termly Home Learning Task - Term 6: Tides of Change

This term in Year 5 we will be continuing our topic ‘Tides of Change’. During our thematic lessons, the children will be delving further into the history as well as the human and physical geography of their local area! We would like the children to immerse themselves in the topic during their home learning by exploring another one of these tasks, or a task of their choosing which links. They may present their work in any way that they wish; it could be a presentation, poster, or something that they make, the possibilities are endless. This piece of work will need to be brought back into school by the last week of term. If something is physically created, please can this be brought in or a photo stuck into books so we can celebrate the children’s success!

We look forward to seeing more fabulous projects.

English:

In English this week we wrote a setting description and focused on using sentence openers to enhance our writing. We highlighted the contrast between the lush jungle and the dilapidated hotel that sits in the middle of it. The children are really enjoying the book so far and we can’t wait to find out what happens next.

Next week, we will be writing a suspense narrative based on our book.

Maths:

This week in maths we started our unit about volume. The children became familiar with the cubed notation and how we can find the volume of an object using cubes as a unit. We used multi-link cubes to find different ways to make a shape that was 5 centimetres cubed and began to understand that we have to multiply the length by the width by the depth to find the volume of a shape.

Next week we will continue to explore volume and will begin to look at problem-solving questions.

Thematic Curriculum:

The highlight of the week was our trip to Howletts, which linked to conservation and our English text. The children absolutely loved the day looking at all the animals and spending the day with their friends. For some children, this was their very first visit to the zoo and a memory that I know they will treasure for a long time. On Wednesday, the children took part in their penultimate Sports Day at Upton and it was great to see so many examples of good sportsmanship along with great parental support. We finished the week by looking at renewable and non-renewable sources of energy and the advantages and disadvantages of each.

Next week we will be focusing on DT and the use of CAD to design a product with a pulley system.

Diversity Day

On Thursday, the children dressed in their chosen country's flag colour and took part in activities that exposed them to different cultures from around the world. The children loved looking at the different pieces of work and have learnt some new facts to wow you with.
