Termly Home Learning Task - Term 6: Tides of Change

This term in Year 5 we will be continuing our topic ‘Tides of Change’. During our thematic lessons, the children will be delving further into the history as well as the human and physical geography of their local area! We would like the children to immerse themselves in the topic during their home learning by exploring another one of these tasks, or a task of their choosing which links. They may present their work in any way that they wish; it could be a presentation, poster, or something that they make, the possibilities are endless. This piece of work will need to be brought back into school by the last week of term. If something is physically created, please can this be brought in or a photo stuck into books so we can celebrate the children’s success!

We look forward to seeing more fabulous projects.

English:

In English this week we wrote a suspense narrative based on a chapter of our book: When the Mountains Roared. To achieve this, we used a range of sentence lengths, especially short ones to create urgency and tension. We also used ‘show not tell’ techniques and kept details from the reader to create an unknown atmosphere. We also had a focus on including colons and semicolons.

Next week, we will be writing a flashback as Ruby looking back at her life in India.

Maths:

This week in maths we finished our volume unit and completed our post-unit quiz. We began our new unit, which involves a variety of concepts but within a problem-solving and reasoning context. We looked at negative numbers, and division with remainders as fractions and decimals.

Next week we will continue our problem-solving lessons by introducing mean and money-related questions.

Thematic Curriculum:

This week our afternoon lessons have centred around preparing for DT next week. We looked at gears and pulleys during our science lesson: what they are and how they work. We also got to know what everyday items use them. Our other sessions this week involved designing a wind turbine that uses a pulley system to make the blades move. We created drawn diagrams, prototypes with a variety of materials and CAD, on the computer, using the software TinkerCAD.

Next week we will be bringing our designs to life during our DT lessons.
