One Childhood - One Chance

Year 6 weekly: 19.01.24

Wow- what a week!

This week has been yet another incredibly busy and productive one, with our children fully engaged and transfixed by their learning!

Thematic

Continuing our journey through the world of Science, our Year 6 children have embarked on an exploration of the digestive system, including the significance of healthy eating in maintaining a balanced diet. Children have been finding out about the different food groups, and have likewise, spent time researching the benefits of each group, in making healthier life choices. To showcase their understanding, children have produced information leaflets, as well as adverts to promote and inform an audience. Thank you to Miss Prescott, who has co-ordinated this week’s activities in such a fab way!

Maths

In Maths this week, children have been learning about co-ordinates, 2D and 3D shape, unlocking a world of spatial understanding and geometric exploration. Through hands-on, practical investigation and problem solving, children have gained a deeper understanding of how to plot co-ordinates, and have likewise, embedded their understanding of how to build 3D shapes from nets.

English

During English this week, our Year 6 children have been introduced to our core text: Skellig. This literary adventure has not only captivated our children’s imagination, but has likewise, enhanced their understanding and use of rich and varied language. As part of this week’s learning, children have produced setting descriptions, painting detailed and evocative imagery of the story’s setting- our children have brought the wonders of the text to life, in ways that are both imaginative and compelling.

The Upton Way

This week, excitement has filled classrooms, in anticipation of a brand new, whole school award. Within class and during assemblies this week, children have participated in discussions about our whole school ethos: the Upton Way. These discussions have not only brought awareness to the importance of values, but have also set the stage for the exciting new initiative: The ‘Upton Way Award’

The 'Upton Way Award' is a weekly recognition, designed to celebrate and applaud classes that consistently demonstrate the Upton Way throughout the week; it’s about celebrating the spirit of Team Upton and every child’s contribution to a collective responsibility in contributing to a positive school culture. The highlight of this award is a beautifully crafted trophy, that will be proudly presented to the deserving class each Friday, during our celebration assembly. Classes will be nominated and recognised for showcasing the school's core values, following school rules, and displaying exceptional qualities such as kindness, consideration, and good manners. The award is an opportunity to acknowledge and celebrate the positive behaviour that contributes to the vibrant and supportive learning environment fostered at Upton.
