One Childhood - One Chance

Year 6 Weekly News: 21.06.24

Another fabulous week in Year 6!

English

This week in English, our young learners have embarked on a touching journey through the pages of Wonder by R.J. Palacio. This novel, with its powerful themes and unforgettable characters, has captivated the hearts and minds of the children. Through the story of August Pullman, a boy with a facial difference, our Year 6’s have delved into important discussions on friendship, discrimination, and kindness. To deepen their understanding of what they’ve read so far, the children have written character descriptions of August Pullman. Children have done a wonderful job capturing the essence of Auggie's character, whilst gaining a deeper appreciation for his journey and the lessons his story imparts.

Next week, children will be embarking on an exciting new project: rewriting a chapter from a book using dialogue to advance the action and reveal character traits. Through which, children will deepen their understanding of narrative techniques as well as their appreciation for storytelling.

Thematic

This week in our topic ‘Light it up!’, our Year 6’s have been learning about light and the eye. The week started with discussions and demonstrations about light sources, how light travels, and how shadows are created. To put their newfound knowledge into practice, children planned and conducted their own scientific investigations, exploring how shadows change, depending on the position of the light source.

Next week, we will be investigating electricity; children will learn how to build and test electrical circuits using batteries, wires, bulbs, and switches. We can’t wait!

Upton Diversity Day

This week, our school celebrated Upton Diversity Day, an enriching and vibrant event dedicated to exploring and embracing the diversity within our global community. This special day was filled with rich discussions about diversity, its connection to the Olympic values, our school values, and British values. Each class researched and studied a different country, creating wonderful displays to showcase their findings. The entire school then visited each class, to learn from each other’s research, making it a fabulous cultural experience for all.

Sports Day

This week, our school grounds buzzed with excitement and energy as we celebrated our annual Sports Day. It was a day filled with enthusiasm, friendly competition, and a strong sense of team spirit. Children competed in their respective houses, showcasing their athletic abilities and the competitive spirit that makes Sports Day one of the most anticipated events of the year. Thank you to the parents who were able to attend- we are hugely grateful for your enthusiastic participation and encouragement, which helped make the day truly memorable.

Pupil of the Week certificates will be awarded on Monday 24th June.
