Health-conscious children have served up a tasty treat at Upton Juniors in Broadstairs.

As part of their Science learning about the human body the Year 3 group focused on the importance of eating a balanced diet and how it helps people stay healthy and strong.

In a series of Design Technology project days the pupils were challenged to design, plan and prepare a nutritious and well-balanced snack of hummus and crudités.

Subject specialist teachers from The Royal Harbour Academy delivered a skills masterclass where the children learnt the importance of kitchen safety and hygiene, and essential skills for preparing food including chopping, cutting and grating.

Pupils also sampled different hummus flavours and a range of vegetables, discussing texture, tastes and personal preferences.

They planned how they would make their dish, explored a recipe for making hummus and decided equipment they would need.

Presentation was also a big consideration, colour, shape and arrangement looked at to make their dish visually appealing.

Working in groups they presented their creations and parents were invited in to school to taste and evaluate the dishes with their children.

Head of Year 3 Becky Andrews said: “Learning about cooking and nutrition is so important, not just for healthy eating but for building essential life skills.

“By teaching children how to cook, we are giving them the tools they need for lifelong learning and independence.

“Through our project days, the children have had the chance to develop these skills in a fun and engaging way.

“It has been fantastic to see their enthusiasm, creativity, and confidence grow in the kitchen. We are incredibly proud of what they have achieved."
