One Childhood - One Chance

Sporting Success Welcomes 2025 at Upton

Sport is an important part of life at Upton Juniors in Broadstairs – and the school is celebrating a double success to start 2025 in fine style.

Table tennis – which is a relatively new sport for Upton after an absence of many years – has seen the team score its second annual victory in successive years.

Defending their title against a strong field of other local primary schools, Upton were in sparkling form, winning 11 out of their 12 games, drawing the other. The tournament was held at Ursuline College in Westgate Upton sports coach and PE lead Callum Noble said: “The boys were in excellent form, pulling off some impressive shots throughout the event.”

Other teams competing represented St Gregory's, Dame Janet, Birchington and Ramsgate Holy Trinity.

Meanwhile Upton’s footballers have earned a place in the final of the coveted Les Riggs Cup against St Peter’s, although a date for the match has yet to be fixed.

To reach the final they beat Cliftonville 3-1, Northdown 3-0, Ramsgate Holy Trinity 5-2, and St Saviours 3-1 in a series of matches over the last two terms.

Mr Noble added: “Throughout the competition so far, the boys have had to dig in at times showing true Upton resilience whilst showing their skills and flare on the pitch to get through. From defence to attack the whole team have done Upton proud no matter the result in the final.”

Head of School Darci Arthur said: “At Upton we endeavour to create as many sporting opportunities for children as possible, giving them the chance to experience a variety of sports no matter what their ability.

“To start 2025 with two impressive performances in two different sports is a fantastic effort. Opposition in both the table tennis and football was very strong and our players’ enthusiasm and determination were big factors.

“The school is proud of their achievements and also of the work of the sports staff who should also be congratulated - now we are looking forward to the football final against a neighbouring side and we know Team Upton will be terrific ambassadors for the school in the final.”

Upton Junior School is part of the Viking Academy Trust with Chilton Primary School and Ramsgate Arts Primary School.
