STEM Learning Blossoms at Upton
Children at Upton Juniors in Broadstairs have been encouraged to ‘feel the force and see the light’ in an exploration of science, technology, engineering and maths – collectively known as STEM.
The term-long learning by Year 3 culminated in a STEM Challenge Day that was the perfect platform for them to showcase the skills and knowledge they have developed.
From science experiments to hands-on engineering, the classroom was buzzing with excitement, creativity, and teamwork.
A challenge to design and build periscopes saw pupils demonstrate their understanding of light and reflection, using mirrors to direct light in their creations. With cardboard tubes, mirrors, and plenty of perseverance, they crafted working designs that allowed them to see around corners and over obstacles.
It was fantastic to see their problem-solving skills in action as they adjusted angles and tweaked their designs to get a clear view.
Magnetism attracted pupils to design and create a magnetic maze game. Using magnets and paper, they guided small metal objects through intricate mazes. The challenge sparked lots of discussion about magnetic forces and how to balance difficulty with fun.
They also made cars, powered by magnets, which they used to guide a car around a track.
The climax of the event was exploring aerodynamics by making and launching paper air rockets. The group experimented with different designs, testing how variables such as fin size and rocket length affected flight distance and stability.
The playground turned into a mini launch pad, with rockets soaring through the air. There were cheers and laughter as pupils celebrated their successes and learned from their attempts to improve their designs.
Head of Year 3 Becky Andrews said: “STEM Challenge Day was a fantastic way to highlight how science, technology, engineering, and maths come together in real-world projects.
“The pupils collaborated brilliantly, demonstrating resilience and enthusiasm in every activity. We are so proud of their achievements and we can’t wait to see how they continue to apply their skills.”
Head of School Darci Arthur added: “STEM is an important part of our learning programme. This special day was a fascinating, fun and challenging way to end an important topic that helps us develop the aspirations and potential of our pupils.”
Upton Junior School is part of the Viking Academy Trust with Chilton Primary School and Ramsgate Arts Primary School.
