Upton’s Flexible Seat of Learning
The term ‘seat of learning’ has taken on a new meaning for children at Upton Juniors in Broadstairs.
In a bid to further boost its inclusive and engaging learning environment, the school has introduced flexible seating options in its Year 3 classrooms this year.
The initiative has already been hailed as a success by teachers and children, highlighting the school’s commitment to innovative and child-centred education.
Flexible seating provides children with the autonomy to choose seating arrangements that best suit their learning styles. Options include bean bags, tray tables, cushions, and wobble cushions alongside traditional chairs and desks.
This diversity aims to accommodate various needs, promoting comfort, focus, and collaboration in the classroom.
Head of Year 3 Becky Andrews said: “We have seen a remarkable improvement in focus and engagement since implementing flexible seating.
“Children feel empowered to make choices about how they learn best, which has likewise boosted their confidence and progress.”
The idea has been expanded to other year groups and Head of School Darci Arthur welcomed the optional seating opportunities.
She believes the initiative aligns with Upton’s core focus in ensuring that all children, regardless of their individual needs or preferences, can thrive and achieve their full potential.
She added: “Upton is dedicated to the ongoing development of a modern, inclusive, and effective educational setting for all our pupils.
“Flexible seating also encourages a sense of community, as children work together to maintain a respectful and adaptable classroom environment.”
Upton Junior School is part of the Viking Academy Trust with Chilton Primary School and Ramsgate Arts Primary School.
