Flipping great fun at Upton as pancake races return

Pancake race fun at Upton

The traditional Upton Junior School pancake race made a welcome return on Shrove Tuesday.

The popular event has been off the menu due to pandemic restrictions since 2020 but the return event was a recipe for fun.

Children of all ages were invited to take part and the races involved competitors tossing their pancakes from the pan as they navigated an obstacle course on the school fields.

The event was organised by Deputy Head of School Dave Walker. He said: “Pupils had to navigate the tricky circuit before flipping – and catching – their pancake. They soon found out it was not such an easy task, particularly when they tossed them higher and higher.

“The pancakes, which they brought in to school from home, were savoury or sweet – or both – and some were adorned with smiley faces.”

Pancakes were also on the menu for school lunch time and were a popular choice.

Head of School Darci Arthur said: “It was a great fun event and the children did really well as they made their way around the course. They certainly embodied resilience, which is one of our core values.

“Alongside the fun they are also learning about the religious significance of Shrove Tuesday and Ash Wednesday and the period of Lent in the run up to Easter.”

The final verdict to the fun event comes from the children – who all agreed that Upton’s pancake race was flippin’ marvellous!
