One Childhood - One Chance

Poetry Counts at Upton

A passion for poetry has seen children of all ages embracing the wonders of the written and spoken verse at Upton Juniors in Broadstairs.

The school has once again embraced National Poetry Day as a key part of its literacy and oracy (talking and listening) drive with pupils of all ages enjoying exploring a range of poetry-themed activities.

The biggest annual mass celebration of poetry in the UK, the event theme this year was ‘counting’ with all years groups immersed in poetry and the wonderful creativity it generates.

Children read and analysed a poem around the theme of counting, took part in performance poetry, wrote their own poems, demonstrated their communication skills in discussing the texts, and enjoyed linked art activities as well.

Each year group had a different poem to focus on. These were: Year3 - The Terrible Ten; Year 4 - ONE; Year 5 - How To Cut A Pomegranate; and Year 6 - Inventory.

The poems, although linked to counting, also had strong links to PSHE (personal, social health and economic education), well-being and art. Some also had links to social media.

“They shared their poems confidently and were so proud of their achievements. It was wonderful to see the vast array of different poems and how different poetic devices were used effectively. "
