One Childhood - One Chance

Kindness and Caring Behind Upton’s Pudsey Day

Embracing and respecting each other’s differences was an important theme behind the fun fund-raising day for Children in Need at Upton Juniors in Broadstairs.

The school was a colourful mix of the charity’s spotty theme with a range of outfits celebrating the annual appeal through a non-uniform day that has raised an impressive £650 in donations.

Head of School Darci Arthur said: “This was one of our most joyous Children in Need days and it involved the whole school. It was important on many levels as a vehicle for awareness of others and it was overwhelming how much was kindly donated. It was a happy and fulfilling event for us all.”

As a school Upton discussed the importance of empathy and kindness; how Children in Need seeks to help and support those who need it most.

Having a superpower was the focus of this year’s event. Embracing children’s differences is at the heart of the school – and so asking the children “What is your superpower?” encouraged them to embrace their individuality, as well as taking time to consider the needs of others and reflect on what the donations will go towards.

Teacher Izzy Reed, Upton’s Personal Development lead said: “Raising money for charity reminds children how as individuals they also contribute to wider local and global communities.”

Assistant Head of School Gemma Scarr added: “It was wonderful to see the children supporting such a wonderful charity and embracing Pudsey and everything that the character has come to represent over the decades.”

Upton Junior School is part of the Viking Academy Trust with Chilton Primary School and Ramsgate Arts Primary School.
