A fabulous week in Year 3!
Thematic:
This week, our Year 3 children have embarked on an exciting Design Technology project linked to cooking and nutrition. With a focus on making a nutritious and well-balanced snack, the children were given the challenge of preparing hummus and crudités. This hands-on experience allowed them to explore food preparation, develop key culinary skills, and understand the importance of a balanced diet.
To begin, the children sampled a different hummus flavours and different vegetables, discussing textures, tastes, and personal preferences. This helped them understand how different ingredients contribute to a dish’s overall appeal. The children then participated in a skills Masterclass, led by specialist teachers from The Royal Harbour Academy, where they learnt essential skills, such as: chopping, cutting and slicing. These activities not only enhanced their cooking abilities but also reinforced safety and hygiene practices in the kitchen.
With creativity in mind, children then planned how they would present their hummus and crudités. They considered colour, shape, and arrangement to make their dish visually appealing as well as delicious. The highlight of the project was, of course, the hands-on cooking session! Under supervision, the children worked diligently to make their hummus from scratch and carefully prepared their vegetables. Afterward, they evaluated their creations, reflecting on taste, texture, and presentation while considering how they could improve their dish in the future.
To conclude the project, we invited parents to a special tasting session where they had the chance to sample their children’s creations. The feedback was overwhelmingly positive, with parents praising the flavours and presentation. It was a proud moment for the children to showcase their efforts and receive recognition for their hard work!
This project has been an invaluable experience for our Year 3 children. Not only did they develop practical cooking skills, but they also deepened their understanding of nutrition and the importance of making healthy food choices. Most importantly, they had fun working collaboratively and exploring new flavours!
We are incredibly proud of all our young chefs and look forward to more exciting projects in the future. Well-done, Year 3!
Next week, our Year 3 children will be diving into an exciting learning journey about Buddhism. Children will be introduced to the key beliefs, traditions, and practices of one of the world's oldest religions, fostering curiosity, understanding, and respect for different cultures and faiths.
English:
This week in English, our Year 3’s have been diving into creative writing by stepping into the shoes of a character! They have written a recount of events from the perspective of Alfie; Mrs Silver’s beloved tortoise, from Esio Trot by Roald Dahl. Before writing, children explored Alfie’s thoughts and emotions, considering how he might feel during a key moment in the story. They structured their writing by identifying important events and sequencing them in a logical order. We then explored the use of rich and varied vocabulary, capturing Alfie’s perspective with sensory details. After writing their first drafts, children then reviewed their work, refining their recounts with improved word choices and sentence structure.
Next week, we will be moving onto writing a persuasive letter, explaining the importance of a healthy lifestyle, using our knowledge and understanding from our Thematic learning.
Maths:
This week in our Maths lessons, we've been diving deep into understanding multiplication and division through different visual representations, such as arrays, bar models, and part-whole models. These models have not only helped children to make abstract concepts more tangible, but they have also supported our Year 3’s in developing a strong conceptual foundation for solving problems.
Next week, we'll be building on our understanding of these visual models as we transition to written methods for multiplication and division.
NSPCC Number Day:
NSPCC Number Day is a national event that encourages children to celebrate numbers and the wonders of mathematics while raising money for the NSPCC. The day is all about making maths fun, inspiring children to see the value of numbers in everyday life, and supporting an incredible charity that helps protect children across the UK.
Our Year 3’s were immersed in a range of exciting activities that made maths come alive. From number-based challenges and puzzles to hands-on games, the morning was filled with opportunities to develop problem-solving skills, boost confidence in maths, and working together as a team. Our children showed incredible generosity and teamwork throughout the morning, contributing to the fundraising efforts and celebrating the joy of maths. We’re so proud of their involvement and the energy they brought to the event!
