Term 3: Cracking the Earth’s Core

This term in Year 4 we are exploring plate tectonics, earthquakes and volcanoes - how they are formed, where they are found and the consequences of them. We would like the children to delve into the topic during their home learning by exploring one of these tasks, or a related task of their choosing. They may present their work in any way that they wish; it could be a presentation, poster, or something that they make, the possibilities are endless. This piece of work will need to be brought back into school before the last week of term. If something is physically created, please can this be brought in or a photo stuck into books so we can celebrate the children’s success!

English:

In English this week we planned and wrote our own disaster story. We thought of our own characters, the setting and outcome of the disaster. For the beginning of the narrative, we described the setting and gave a little background to the characters. Then, we described the disaster, ensuring we used vocabulary to build tension and suspense. Finally, we described how the characters survived the volcanic eruption or earthquake.

Next week will be poetry week. We will be reading and performing poems as well as writing our own.

Maths:

This week in maths we continued our fractions unit. This included ordering and comparing fractions on a number line using equivalent fractions. We also explored what mixed numbers and improper fractions are.

Next week we will begin to add and subtract fractions.

Thematic Curriculum:

This week during our afternoon lessons, we used compass directions and grid references. We also plotted volcano and earthquake locations on a map. We investigated how cylinders can be used to build a structure and what material would be best to use.

On Wednesday, we celebrated Chinese New Year. We went to school dressed in red or traditional Chinese dress and completed activities that link to China. We looked at the terracotta army and the story behind the warrior statues and produced posters persuading people to visit the museum. We also made the different Chinese zodiac animals using tangrams and created a dragon puppet using lolly sticks and a concertina body.

Next week we will continue exploring the stability of structures in DT by designing and building our ideas.
