One Childhood - One Chance

14.2.25 Year 5 Weekly News

Term 3 Week 6

English

This week, the children have learnt the story of Beowulf and retold it in their own words. They have also created an information leaflet about Canterbury Cathedral. Using the knowledge they have learnt, they created a persuasive leaflet to encourage children to visit the cathedral. The focus was using modal verbs to persuade. In PAG this week, the children were learning about colons and how they are used in writing. Next term, we will be starting our new class text, Who Let the Gods Out which links to our topic of Gods and Mortals.

Maths

This week, the children have completed the first week of angles. They have classified angles, measured angles and calculated them. Next term, we will be continuing our angles learning and introduce percentages.

Thematic

This week, the children have been learning about Buddhism in RE. The children have learnt about the eightfold path and the four Noble Truths. On Wednesday, the children visited a local church, St Peters in Thanet. They participated in a treasure hunt to find key features of the church. We discussed how many of the features could also be found in Canterbury Cathedral. Next term, we will start the term with PSHE, with a focus on kindness.

Sir Link Alot

This week, year 5 are recapping level 3 key words.

Speaker Competition

This year’s topic:

We would like you to think of a new subject that you would like to be taught in your school and persuade your head of school to introduce it.

Use your imagination, this subject could be as wild and as wonderful as you like!

You’ll then need to focus on the art of persuasion to convince your head of school to introduce this new subject at your school!

Key dates:

  • Over the half term write the speech. Information can be found on the blogs.

  • Practice at home in front of people.

  • Class heats are the week beginning Monday 24th February and will take place in the children’s classrooms.

  • Week beginning Monday 3rd March - Year group heat where 16 children will compete and 4 will be selected to move forwards.

  • Thursday 13th March (PM) - The year group winners will compete across the school by performing their speeches once more. Parents of these children will be invited to this heat.

  • Friday 28th March – The Upton winners will perform their speech once more and go with Miss Scarr to Royal Harbour where they will compete against the winners from Chilton Primary School and Ramsgate Arts Primary School.

The Speaker is a wonderful opportunity for all children to get involved in and develop their oracy skills which are essential life skills.
