One Childhood - One Chance

Year 6 Weekly News 6.12.24

This week in Year 6...

What a fantastic week it has been in Year 6! The children were outstanding as tour guides and champions during our open day, gaining countless compliments from prospective parents. Their pride in showing off our school and their confidence in speaking to visitors truly stood out. We are immensely proud of each and every one of them for their hard work and enthusiasm whatever role they played on Wednesday.

We also enjoyed an excellent trip to the pantomime. The behaviour of our students was exemplary, making the day even more enjoyable. It was a genuine pleasure to spend the day with them!

Upcoming Events

Christmas Unwrapped

Next week Year 6 will participate in a Christmas-themed workshop at two local churches. This is an engaging and interactive session which supports the children’s understanding of the Christian perspective of Christmas.

6R and 6Y will visit Queen’s Road Baptist Church on Tuesday 10th December

6B and 6G will visit St.Peter’s Baptist Church on Wednesday 11th December

All children will require a coat and 6B and 6G should wear full school uniform on the Wednesday. We will walk to the workshops after lunch and return for 3pm.

Christmas Fair

Friday 13th December marks Upton's annual Christmas Fair. As is tradition, the children have organised themselves into groups to plan and run their own stalls.

A few reminders:

• Wear Christmas jumpers/something festive on Friday 13th December in return for bringing in a donation for the raffle or tombola prizes.  • Children can walk around the Fair during the afternoon.

• Home time will be 3.00pm as usual. Children will be dismissed from their classrooms at this time.

• Entry/Exit to the Fair will be via the office only. Children are not permitted to leave early.

English

In English this week, we've continued our saga of Viking quests, focusing on weaving dialogue and rich descriptions into our narratives. We also tackled the concept of along with retrieval-based questions on our text to enhance comprehension.

Next week, we will create a biography for our main character, Gunnar, detailing his eventful life so far.

Maths

In maths, we’ve been tackling the addition and subtraction of fractions.

Next week, we’ll be multiplying fractions, both by integers and other fractions.

Thematic Curriculum

This week, we have explored Viking longships. The children thoroughly enjoyed making their own ships, showcasing their creativity and teamwork. We also used Google Maps to explore areas in England where the Vikings settled. It sparked some intriguing discussions about the geographical features that influenced their choices.

Next week, we're set to consider the difference between developed and developing countries.

We will also take part in Christmas Unwrapped Workshops at two local churches.

Homework

- Please read with your child at least 3 times a week.

- Children should be playing TTRS at least 3 times a week to build their confidence and fluency with times table knowledge.

- Children have taken their Term 2 AR Star Reader assessment and their ZPD can be found on their AR account. They will also receive a sticker next week to help them identify the correct books for their reading level. Once your child has read their book, they will need to complete a quiz on it before getting a new one. These quizzes can be done either in school or at home on Accelerated Reader using the log-in codes found in their reading records.
